The Oath tracks the intertwined lives of Dr. Katz and SS Doktor Bloch, who both survive Auschwitz and the war to practice medicine in the United States, never losing the stains upon their souls. Katz, a respected Jewish French surgeon captured by the Nazis, volunteers to serve at Auschwitz, believing he can protect his wife and children from the gas chambers by helping Joseph Mengele and other SS physicians with their human studies. There he meets Tamara Lissner, a Czech teenager who miraculously survives death in the chambers, but when he hides her in his lab, she becomes witness to the medical torture Katz is forced to impose upon fellow Jews as he assists Doktor Bloch in his cold immersion experiments. After the war, Doktor Bloch avoids criminal prosecution through Operation Paperclip, a clandestine government program that welcomed German scientists to America (including Werner von Braun), ignoring Nazi ties and their participation in the war.Years later, Tamara reenters Dr. Katz's life, helping him deal with the shame and guilt of his actions at Auschwitz. But just when Katz is coming to terms with his past, he receives a call from former Auschwitz inmate Martin Brosky, who has devoted his life to bringing painful retribution to Nazi criminals who have evaded capture. Martin insists that Michel help him kill Bloch, and Michel must now weigh the risks of defying Martin against the sweetness of revenge, knowing well that his own sordid complicity at Auschwitz could be revealed. 1. The first part of this volume comprises contributions dealing with different approaches to the theme of travel and science, partly inspired by searches on the African continent. It opens with an article on Emil Holub, a relatively unknown Africa traveller, followed by an article analysing the recorded experiences of Africans travelling Germany and Austria in the nineteenth century. Another article provides an overview over detective novels set in Africa, with the travelling detective as a mediating figure. Seyfried’s novel Herero is the subject of a reappraisal. Other contributions deal with Volker Braun’s critique of real existing socialism, written in the tradition of the late Enlightenment critic Wieland, with the question of adoption in Lessing’s Nathan der Weise, with reports of expeditions to the Arctic and its fictional predecessors in the nineteenth and twentieth century, with Zafer Şenocak’s novel Die Prärie; and finally, with Hans-Ulrich Treichel’s 2007 narrative Der Papst, den ich gekannt habe. The second part of this volume presents contributions on Karl Grosse’s novel Der Genius, on the unpublished correspondence between Insel publishers and Stefan Zweig during the First World War, on Egon Friedell’s Judastragödie of 1923, on Gerhart Hauptmann’s autobiographical writings, and on Christian Kracht’s controversially received novel Imperium. This volume ends with two interviews, one with Thomas Stangl and another one with Phlipp Khabo Koepsell.

Volume 17 is the second in a special topic series devoted to modern techniques in protein NMR, under the Biological Magnetic Resonance series. Volume 16, with the subtitle Modern Techniques in Protein NMR , is the first in this series. These two volumes present some of the recent, significant advances in the biomolecular NMR field with emphasis on developments during the last five years. We are honored to have brought together in these volume some of the world s foremost experts who have provided broad leadership in advancing this field. Volume 16 contains - vances in two broad categories: I. Large Proteins, Complexes, and Membrane Proteins and II. Pulse Methods. Volume 17 contains major advances in: I. Com- tational Methods and II. Structure and Dynamics. The opening chapter of volume 17 starts with a consideration of some important aspects of modeling from spectroscopic and diffraction data by Wilfred van Gunsteren and his colleagues. The next two chapters deal with combined automated assignments and protein structure determination, an area of intense research in many laboratories since the traditional manual methods are often inadequate or laborious in handling large volumes of NMR data on large proteins. First, Werner Braun and his associates describe their experience with the NOAH/DIAMOD protocol developed in their laboratory.

Justin Bieber: First Step 2 Forever: My Story

'It´s a big, big world It´s easy to get lost in it...' —Justin Bieber, 'Up' I love those lines in the lyrics. Sometimes I feel like that´s what everyone´s expecting. My world got very big, very fast, and a lot of people expect me to get lost in it. I grew up in a small town in Canada. I taught myself to sing in front of my bedroom mirror and to play guitar on a hand-me-down. My mom posted my first videos on YouTube. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that I´d sell millions of records, sing for the president of the United States and sell out a massive arena tour. So no, I´m not lost. Not at all. If anything, onstage in front of my fans, I´m home. I´m found. And that´s what this book is about: my journey, from singing and busking on the sidewalk in Stratford, Ontario, to performing and showing my appreciation to millions of fans all over the world for making this dream a reality. My music and lyrics give a glimpse of what´s in my heart, but I think this book is a window into my world. In here are hundreds of pictures of me that no one´s ever seen before, and I´ll tell you about who I was before I joined forces with Scooter Braun and Usher and got a record deal, and who I´ve become since I´ve been blessed with the opportunity to share my music with the world. This is my gift to you, the fans who´ve supported and been with me on this amazing journey every step of the way.

Until three years ago, Dixie Hemingway was a deputy with the Sarasota County Sherriff's Department in southwest Florida. Then came a tragic accident. Now Dixie's a pet-sitter on Siesta Key, a lush, exotic barrier island where the people tend to be rich, suntanned, and tolerant of one another's quirks. As Dixie tried to get her life back in order, pet-sitting is the perfect job. She goes into people's homes while they're gone and takes care of their pets; she likes the animals, they like her, and she doesn't have to deal with people very much. She especially does not have to be afraid that she'll run into a situation that will cause her to lose her hard-won composure. But when Dixie finds a man bizarrely drowned in a cat's water bowl, she is drawn into a tangled web of danger and secrets. Unbeknownst to Lieutenant Guidry, the homicide detective handling the murder, Dixie begins her own investigation into the whereabouts of the cat's owner, who has now vanished. Fans of The Cat Who... book series by Lilian Jackson Braun will adore this riveting new pet-oriented sleuth and will eagerly await Dixie's next case: Will duplicity dog the dachshund?
